Pride and tradition

Stiftsgården is a former vicarage and is situated in peaceful seclusion at the center of Skellefteå’s oldest cultural area. Stiftsgården dates back to the 1500s and our history is an important part of Skellefteå´s history. Over the centuries many important events have taken place at Stiftsgården and many important guests have visited us.

The Russian invasion in 1809

The battle of Skellefteå 1809

Our mainbuilding, the manor, was built in 1802 to serve as the home of vicar Nils Ström and his family, and feels intimate despite its size. In the summer of 1809 the vicarage was occupied by Russian soldiers. By the time of the Russian invasion on May 15th 1809, the priest and his family had already fled, but they left their young housemaid, Margareta Renhorn, in charge of showing hospitality to friends and foes alike. Margareta was a charming hostess during the Russian ”visit” and this was likely crucial to why the vicarage was not subjected to typical treatment during war, i.e. burning everything to the ground. Thanks to her, we are still able to enjoy the beautiful historic surroundings at Stiftsgården.

Home of the founder of Skellefteå

Anna Nordlander 1843-1879

Stiftsgården used to be in the very centre of the growing town of Skellefteå, and two of the prominent figures in Skellefteå’s history lived here: the founder of Skellefteå, vicar Nils Nordlander (1796-1874), and his daughter, the famous artist, Anna Nordlander (1843-1879). Anna’s art can be seen in Stiftsgården’s own art museum, located upstairs in the manor. Anna and Nils Nordlander lived at Stiftsgården during the mid-1800s. Öfre salongen (The Upper Salon), our comfortable room for mingling and conversation, is decorated in the style of that era.

Today a modern conference and hotel facility

The vicarage from 1802

Stiftsgården’s modern history began in 1964, when the diocesan centre for Luleå was founded. It became the main location for courses, additional training and retreats. Later on, a number of additions and careful renovations were made to turn Stiftsgården into a modern conference and hotel facility with an excellent restaurant. But its history and soul have remained intact throughout the years.
